Alter Ego
GuacStar Kitchen and Cantina GuacStar Kitchen and Cantina is an unpretentious dining destination where the experience counts as much as the food. The eatery offers mouth-watering plant-based versions of Mexican food, margaritas and new takes on cocktails made popular in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Standout menu items include the Baja Pescado Street Tacos, made with beer battered royal trumpet mushrooms, and the Enchiladas Calabacitas, made with roasted squash and zucchini, house-made roja and verde sauce and cashew crema.
Sweet Republic One of Arizona’s favorite local ice cream shops, Sweet Republic, recently opened their newest location in Tempe. This new destination for ice cream lovers is located at the Watermark development, on the north side of Tempe Town Lake. Their artisan ice cream is made in small batches, with natural ingredients such as milk from Arizona dairy farms, fresh fruit and handmade marshmallows. You’ll find standard flavors that you know and love, but you’ll be tempted by some of their unique combos such as Peaberry Espresso and Church Music, a collaboration with The Shop Beer Co.
CoreLife Eatery Looking for healthy food that tastes delicious? CoreLife Eatery is Tempe’s newest fast-casual restaurant serving salads, rice bowls and tacos made with ingredients free of GMOs, artificial colors or additives. Patrons can choose from suggested options, such as Southwest Grilled Chicken with Purple Rice, Sriracha Ginger Tofu and Ancient Grains and Korean Pulled Pork Tacos.
Drink Me! Tea Room A twist on the British tradition, Drink Me! Tea Room is a charming place for afternoon tea in South Tempe. Their whimsical décor is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. They offer several options for tea service and reservations are required in advance. The Wonderland Afternoon Tea is a mix of savory bites, scones and sweet treats and the Petite Tea offers a selection of scones served with coconut cream and lemon curd. You can choose from a list of organic teas to accompany your treats, all of which are plant-based, gluten free and absolutely delicious. Check their website for seasonal offerings.
Alter Ego Alter Ego is the signature restaurant at the Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown. With a gorgeous interior space and a patio open to views of Arizona State University, Alter Ego serves elevated fusion cuisine expertly executed by Executive Chef Ken Arneson, such as the Katsu Chicken Sandwich and Brick Oven Calabrian Shrimp. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and also offer inventive hand-crafted cocktails. They have also recently added weekend brunch with not so typical dishes like “FRO,” with breakfast pork fried rice, a teppanyaki-style omelet, Asian pear salad and Thai vinaigrette, and the Banana Fritter Pancake with bruleed bananas, cinnamon whipped cream and warm syrup.
Alibi Change your point of view and visit Alibi on the 14th floor of the Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown. This poolside rooftop bar offers a menu inspired by street food from around the world, with options including an ahi tuna Poki Sampler and Filipino Style Empanadas. Here you can nosh with friends, sip on a cocktail, wine or beer and catch the sunset all at once.
Alibi
Postino South Tempe Postino South Tempe opened in September. Postino, a metro area favorite, is beloved for its menu of bruschetta boards, sharable snacks, salads, paninis, Arizona craft brews, and nearly 30 wines by the glass. Join them for daily happy hour, $5 ’til 5 p.m., when all wines by the glass and pitchers of beer are $5 from open-5 p.m. After 8 p.m. on Mon. and Tues. evenings, partake in their $25 Bottle & Board, a bottle of wine and a board of bruschetta for $25 after 8 p.m. Funky décor including mid-century modern furnishings, vintage Tempe concert posters, and a 300-foot art wall covered in skateboard ads makes this location a standout from the rest.

BREAKING NEWS:
NGLCC Endorses Joe Biden for President
The Business Voice of the LGBT Community Announces Endorsement
Citing Biden’s Record on Small Business and LGBT Progress
|
|
The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the business voice of the LGBT community, has publicly announced its endorsement of Joseph R. Biden for President of the United States. NGLCC has only endorsed for president once previously in its nearly twenty-year history and the vote was unanimous by the organization’s Board of Directors.
|
|
“The NGLCC is proud to endorse a champion for inclusion. We need to elect a president with a commitment to LGBTQ equality, ending racism and racial violence, promoting small businesses and entrepreneurship and ensuring a safe and equitable society for every American. Joe Biden is that candidate,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & President Justin Nelson.
“Joe Biden proudly affirms an essential core value of the NGLCC: that we all deserve our shot at the American Dream, and that our economy only succeeds when it is available to all LGBT and allied Americans.”
|
|
“The stakes have never been so high for the future of our country and the LGBT business community. Joe Biden is the champion our businesses and our families need to thrive,” said NGLCC Co-Founder and CEO Chance Mitchell.
“The LGBT community has come too far to lose its seat at the table, and we are certain that a President Biden will continue fighting for the collective economic and social longevity of America’s 1.4 million LGBT business owners and the more than $1.7 trillion they add to the U.S. economy despite ongoing discrimination.”

During this virtual event, special guests will talk about Vice President Biden’s plans to build a stronger, more equitable economy, promote entrepreneurship, tackle structural racism, fight systemic injustice and end discrimination against LGBTQ+ people once and for all.

Artsploitation Films and Kino Lorber Release
Benjamin
A Romantic Comedy of a Different Kind by Simon Amstell
Now on DVD and Digital Platforms including Kino Now
Please contact Matt Barry at mbarry@kinolorber.com
to request an online screener for review.
“Simon Amstell’s funny, charming and overpoweringly personal comedy is a nervous romance, in which both parties get to be Annie Hall … a miraculously heartfelt love story, sweet and poignant in all its awkwardness.” – The Guardian
“A laugh-out-loud love story with bite. Sparkles with wit, warmth and weirdness” – Total Film
“A tender, funny and, at times, painful film” – The Daily Mail
“Witty, effervescent and unexpectedly soulful” – The Times (London)
“Funny, bittersweet and affecting” – Empire
New York, NY — August 25, 2020 — Artsploitation Films and Kino Lorber are proud to announce that Benjamin, a quirky, anxiety-fueled gay rom-com directed by Simon (“Nevermind the Buzzcocks”) Amstell and starring Colin Morgan (Merlin, The Happy Prince), is now available on DVD and digital platforms including Kino Now.
Benjamin was an Official Selection of the BFI London Film Festival, and won the Audience Award and was nominated for the Grand Jury Award for Best Film at the Milan International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
Synopsis:
Simon Amstell’s offbeat gay romantic comedy centers around Benjamin (Colin Morgan), a nervous, neurotic filmmaker juggling the anxieties of finalizing his upcoming film with the fear and awkwardness of a burgeoning romance. Will Benjamin’s insecurities get in the way of success and happiness? Will his film be a critics-savaging disaster and he, a one-hit wonder? Amstell peppers this entertaining tale with scene-stealing cast of supporting characters including Joel Fry (Game of Thrones), Jessica Raine, Jack Rowan and Anna Chancellor.

At a time of national demonstrations in support of Black lives and against systemic racism and during a national health crisis, it is heartening to have good news from the Supreme Court. The decision handed down by the Court today affirms and emphasizes the importance of Americans coming together for the good of the nation and all its people. The Supreme Court has ruled that companies do not have a right to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people in the workplace. This historic decision says that LGBTQ+ people are, and should be, protected from discrimination under federal law. And while this is welcome news, the reality is that we still have much to do.
Changes to Section 1557 of the Health Care Rights Law last Friday rolling back healthcare protections for transgender people, as well as the pervasive racism that continues to exist across our country, demonstrate the long road we still have ahead to end discrimination.
There are still critical gaps in our federal non‐discrimination laws. It is still legal for federally funded entities including hospitals, colleges, and adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. It is also legal for stores, restaurants, and hotels to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community in certain situations.
“Comprehensive federal protections for LGBTQ+ people are about basic human needs. They ensure everyday Americans are able to earn a living, be safe in their communities, serve their country, receive medical care, and take care of the ones they love,” said Denise Spivak, CenterLink’s CEO.
CenterLink calls on Congress to pass full federal non‐discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people and to continue working toward true equality for ALL people.
At 4pm PT / 7pm ET, CenterLink will join a virtual national rally with other LGBTQ+ leaders from across the country and those who led the fight for these cases. Immediately after the rally, a panel of experts will discuss the court’s opinion and offer analysis of its potential effects. The public is welcome to attend both events. Nearly 2,000 Christians from around the world had signed on to Christians United: A Statement In Support of LGBT+ Inclusion in the Church on Thursday morning, including more than 300 denominational leaders, theologians, and Christian influencers.
San Diego, CA: Nearly 2,000 Christians from around the world had signed on to Christians United: A Statement In Support of LGBT+ Inclusion in the Church on Thursday morning, including more than 300 denominational leaders, theologians, and Christian influencers.
Christians United is an international theological statement bringing together thousands of LGBT+ affirming Christians to declare with one voice that the Church of Jesus Christ must be a place where LGBT+ people are celebrated and embraced. Christians United came as a direct response to The Nashville Statement, a document composed and signed by 150 major evangelical leaders in August 2017, which reaffirmed toxic, non-affirming theological commitments that have caused verifiable harm to countless LGBT+ people of faith around the world.
The statement was originally drafted by LGBT+ Christian activist and Nomad Partnerships Executive Director, Brandan Robertson and was edited by a distinguished editorial board including Dr. J. R. Daniel Kirk, Bishop Joseph Tolton, Rev. Steve Chalke, and Dr. Paula Williams.
Article 1 of the statement begins by declaring:
“WE AFFIRM that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and that the great diversity expressed in humanity through our wide spectrum of unique sexualities and gender identities is a perfect reflection of the magnitude of God’s creative work.”
In the first twenty-four hours of it’s release, Christians United was signed on to by over 1,000 Christians from around the world, including top theologians and the leaders of some of the worlds most influential Christian denominations.
Christians United stands as a faithful witness that a new day is dawning in Christianity, a day in which the Church of Jesus Christ repents of its sin of exclusion, and swings open it’s doors to welcome all of God’s diverse children.
To see the full text of the statement, visit www.ChristiansUnitedStatement.org.

National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce snapshot of
Certified LGBT Business Enterprises® (LGBTBEs) explores powerful economic contributions to America across all business sectors
|
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the business voice of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, has released the first-ever snapshot demonstrating the economic and social impact of America’s LGBT business owners and entrepreneurs. The America’s LGBT Economy report explores the revenues, types, sizes and geography of LGBT-owned businesses currently certified by NGLCC, as well as the number of jobs they create and the personal narratives of successful LGBT business owners who reflect the very best about America’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
Bob Witeck of certified LGBTBE Witeck Communications helped prepare this landmark report. Witeck’s works has helped give voice to the LGBT community and our annual spending power. Now he has helped NGLCC produce the first look at our economic impact as a business community.
“The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be able to evidence, through this report, what we’ve observed since our founding fifteen years ago — that America’s LGBT business owners are driving our economy upward and deserve every opportunity to keep creating jobs and innovating our industries. The estimated 1.4 million LGBT business owners NGLCC advocates for have truly earned a place at the equality table,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & President Justin Nelson. “If you are an LGBT business owner and not yet certified, you’re leaving opportunities on the table to help your business and our economy grow. For the LGBT community, this also means we are missing out on more accurate data, role models, job creator, and future success stories that prove ‘If you can buy it, a Certified LGBTBE can supply it.'”
“These numbers tell the real story,” said Bob Witeck, President of Witeck Communications, a certified LGBTBE that served as the analyst for this report. “While our community’s $917 billion spending power highlights our market clout, the jobs, tax revenues and profits we create as employers and entrepreneurs define our full economic value to America. We are just beginning to scratch the surface of our potential.”
“At NGLCC, we have nearly 200 corporate and government partners that understand not only the value of the LGBT dollar, but the economic imperative of inclusivity and LGBT visibility in their supply chains and marketplace. This groundbreaking report proves our NGLCC philosophy that economic visibility, just like social visibility, is essential in building a diverse and inclusive society,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & CEO Chance Mitchell.
